Meet the MP series
All Nagaoka MP (Moving Permalloy) series cartridges belong to the 'Moving Iron' (MI) family and have interchangeable needles.
In the body (right above the needle carrier) is a relatively large, stationary Samarium-Cobalt magnet.
The cantilever is not provided with a magnet (as is the case with standard MM cartridges) but made of an alloy with a very high magnetic conductivity.
Thanks to this construction, the MP's have a low tip mass, an improved dynamic behavior and an efficient generator.
More about the MP-500
The MP500 is Nagaoka's current flagship and although the entire MP line is designed according to the same recipe, this can be seen in a number of details.
For example, the needle holder is anchored by means of a tiny Allen screw.
In addition, the housing is better shielded thanks to a 'permalloy' shield and the coils are selected.
Due to the increased amount of metal, the MP500 also weighs more than its relatives; 8 grams, clean on the hook.
The pure diamond (nude shank) needle tip has a so-called SuperFine line contact and is located at the end of a boron cantilever.
The recommended stylus pressure is approximately 1.5 grams while the frequency range is from 20 Hertz to 25 kiloHertz.
The maximum output voltage is 3 milliVolts and 47 kiloOhms provides a good starting point as a termination (40 to 50 kiloOhms is usable for an MP).
